Background

I’m a doctor and father of 6 month old twin boys (future crossfitters).

What was your activity level like before CrossFit?

I’ve always been into lifting weights, but get bored easily.  This past winter, my wife was on bed rest and then we had the twins and got pretty busy…needless to say after months of inactivity and lots of  take-out, I was in pretty bad shape.

What do you like most about Crossfit?

I love that the work-outs are different every single day, so it is impossible to get bored.  I’m competitive by nature and I like the competitive but super friendly spirit in the gym. It pushes me to a different level while having fun at the same time.  Crossfit is addictive and I look forward to every work out!

How has this changed you in other parts of your life?

I have a lot more energy, which helps me with my long work hours.  It feels great to buy smaller pants and new belts!

What goals has crossfit helped you reach?

I have lost 25 pounds, which is awesome. My strength has increased significantly and my running pace has significantly improved as well.

Doctor and mother of two young children.

What was your activity level like before CrossFit?

Skiing in the winter, running maybe 1-2 x/week, sometimes biking.  Sometimes Id go through periods where I would do nothing at all.  Then Id go through periods when Id join a gym/club, even get personal trainer,  and try to stay on a regimen but could never really stick with it more than a few months– I  get bored easily :)

What do you like most about crossfit?

The results I see from my workouts.  Im in better shape now than I have ever been in my life.  The workouts are really efficient and effective.  I can accomplish so much more in less time than Id previously invest in exercise.  Unlike previous workout regimens, I never get sick of Crossfit.  Every day is different and I look forward to going.  The group atmosphere is also a lot of fun. Its very social. Ive developed some great friendships through Crossfit.

How has this changed you in other parts of your life?

I feel better and so much healthier.  I can do every physical activity I attempt better than I used to.  I can finally ski moguls (Im sure its all those wallballs).  I can run faster and farther than i used to with less training.

What goals has crossfit helped you reach?

Getting down to (even below) my pre-baby weight.  I lost 15 pounds from my max weight in first 3 months and have been able to maintain it for over a year without feeling like Ive had to sacrifice.  Even more importantly, I like having more muscle tone and being stronger.

Is there is really something unique about a Crossfit program that if different from anything else out there?

It really works.  I dont really do much except show up to the gym, do what the coaches tell me to do a best/hard as I can, and avoid eating junk (Nicolle and Emilio introduced me to the Paleo diet — seems to work well for me).  It has been amazing to see not only my own results but all of the other Crossfit veterans transform.  We can all do workouts that we wouldnt have been able to do a few months ago (and BTW,  you all are looking great at the pool!).  While Nicolle and Emilio (and later Heather) got us started, the addition of Sean has been incredible– just when I thought it couldnt get better.  His knowledge of olympic weightlifting is unbelievable and has taken the program to a new level.

Success Story Cindy Ackerman

Background:

I am a busy professional working mom…I have 2 kids age 5 and 7.

What was your activity level like before CrossFit?

I have always been an active person for most of my life with the exception of right after having children. I had 2 kids 18 months apart and after having my kids found myself in a position of trying to figure out how to regain my athletic body, personality and competitive nature.

What do you like most about Crossfit?

The best thing about crossfit is the varied workouts as well as the supportive setting. The workouts change from day to day and the encouragement you both give and receive is great.

How has this changed you in other parts of your life?

Crossfit helps with goals both setting them and attaining them. It helps to regain focus on various other parts of your life from your professional to home life.
What goals has crossfit helped you reach?

I am in the best shape of my life! I look forward to going to crossfit and really cannot imagine going back to zumba again!

Back Ground:

I am 35, a father of two girls under 6 and work full time.  I was pretty active in my late teens and early twenties.  I rowed in college, spent a fair amount of time on my mountain bike, skis and snowboard.  Over the past ten years, though, I had built up a bundle of excuses why I couldn’t fit fitness into my life: kids, job, a commute, the expense, family responsibilities.

What was your activity level like before CrossFit?

I was tired, lazy, and unhappy about my physical state, but had almost given up entirely on ever getting back on track.   I was too tired to exercise, but only exercise was going to give me the energy to feel better – Red Bull and cheeseburgers certainly weren’t working.  I reluctantly joined CrossFit Stapleton just before Christmas 2010. My wife had submitted my name to Nicolle as a candidate for the club’s weight loss challenge.  I laugh now about how excited Nicolle was to have me as a project.

What do you like most about Crossfit?

I am the type of person who thrives when encouraged by others; and that really works at CFS.  Everyone supports each other… especially when working hard.  My biggest struggle was and is running, though I have made significant improvements in my endurance.  The surprise is that improvements don’t come from doing the same thing for hours on end.  I couldn’t do ten sit-ups, any push-ups or pull-ups, or run a full flight of stairs when I started.  I couldn’t run a full mile for a while.  The mix of movements and strength building makes you better at everything you do.

What goals has crossfit helped you reach?

I am fully addicted to the CrossFit lifestyle.  Through the routines these guys put together and improvements in diet, I have lost over 50 pounds.  I’ve cut about seven inches from my waist and am wearing coats two sizes smaller than I used to.

How has this changed you in other parts of your life?

I am noticeably happier and have a much more positive outlook on life lately.  None of it has been easy, but it has been attainable. Each success is incrementally greater than the last, and achieving them keeps me coming back for more.

Back Ground:

I am a busy mother of two with a busy photography business.

What was your activity level like before CrossFit?

I have always “worked out”. Gone to the gym. I have always been committed to exercise my entire life except college. I have run a marathon, half marathons and various mileage in between as well as have worked out in gyms with weights. It was typical for me to exercise 1 hour to 2 hours 5 days a week for 3/4 of the year and hardly at all to none the last quarter of the year when my work load is high. I ran and ran and ran…..  But, then I would quickly get “out of shape”. I found myself getting frustrated with my lack of consistency and improvement.

Then I found Crossfit Stapleton and it all quickly changed. I am floored that I am 41 and in the best shape of my life. I have lost over 15 lbs of bodyfat, and have worked hard to become stronger and leaner each day.

What do you like most about crossfit?

I love so many things about Crossfit. I love how strong I am and feel. I look forward to getting up early (not normal for me) and seeing what new challenges I will have.  My mind stays present in the workouts because of the challenge and intensity. I don’t get bored. I love Nicolle, Emilio, Sean, and Heather and the passion they bring to the gym. So many great and positive like minded people are in the classes. I have met many new friends; we all encourage each other to do our best.

How has this changed you in other parts of your life?

The best part about Crossfit for me has been the role model I am for my children. They see that hard work does pay off and they are proud! I recently PR’d on my half marathon, I shaved 2 minutes off my previous time!  How did I do it? I ran less and  cut my mileage back compared to previous races I have done, and I did CrossFit 4 times a week in place of my slow “easy” recovery days. On a professinal level, I am an active photographer and my energy level has improved exponentially throughout the day, and lugging around heavy equipment has become much easier.

What goals has crossfit helped you reach?

My body fat percentage has dropped from 30% to 23% and I have lost (approx) 5 inches around my hips, 1.5 to 2 inches on each leg, minimum of 2 inches on my lower stomach maybe even 3 or 4, about an inch around my waist. In regards to performance….the list is endless…..175# Back Squat, 110# OHS, 125# Push Press, #125 for a Clean. Before CrossFit, I had never done a pull up in my life and I kept asking as I do, can I ever do that?? Now I can do pull ups! I am fully ADDICTED to Crossfit and feel fortunate to have found this amazing group!
