Do you know Jen Hanzlick? She has been CrossFitting since May 2011. Jen is quick to smile, laugh, and cheer on her fellow CrossFitters. She is easily one of the most positive forces in our gym. It has been motivational and exciting to watch her conquer new challenges and put together a solid, well-rounded CrossFit game. Jen is one of the reasons we love to coach and be part of such a great group of people. Jen’s dedication in the gym certainly carries over into her professional life. She is the CEO/owner of “Clutter Truckers”; a rapidly growing debris removal business.
2. What is your Age?
3. What is your occupation?
Business Owner of Clutter Trucker: Hoarding and Junk Removal Service
4. When did you first start CrossFitting?
5. What is your Favorite WOD? How about your favorite Benchmark W.O.D.?
I love the Bear Complex. I like workouts with ball slams, double unders, and dead lifts! Favorite Benchmark WOD: I have finally learned to love “Nancy” and enjoy “Fight Gone Bad” too!
6. What is your least favorite WOD?
I dislike any workout with high reps of toes to bar or pulls ups. I whine like a baby when my hands rip. The 2k row makes me sick to my stomach thinking about it…confined on the rower with nowhere to go for 8 minutes its torture!
7. Tell us about your sports and fitness background.
I grew up in a family of athletes, and my kids have all played sports. I have always been active and competitive. I played volleyball, basketball, track, softball, soccer. Just prior to joining CFS I ran a half marathon and ran in some 5k and 10k races. At the time I thought it was a good way to stay in shape and now I realize I was wrong…. Sean is right!! (Sean is always right (duh) Not to mention it is awfully boring!!
8. How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?
A friend introduced me to CrossFit last year. So, my first taste of CrossFit was tabata in the park, it was push-ups, sit-ups, air squats, pull-ups and it was a lot harder than it sounded. The first workout at Stapleton I can remember was “Cindy”… I believe I was with Cindy and Laura and Nicolle and I was scared… I thought they were all badass! So…Now you know the truth?
9. What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)
Recently the guy behind the counter of a department store told me my arms made him not want to eat the chocolate chip cookie he had stashed behind his register…. and that was all the validation I’d ever needed!! HA Seriously though, I am in the best shape I have ever been in and feel great. Participating in the Whole 9 Nutrition Challenge at CFS changed my eating habits forever and I am thankful for that. As it is nicely put on the t-shirt I am stronger, faster, leaner than before…. Wow Jen…we are so glad you are picking up guys with chocolate chip cookie fetishes at Target…this is our goal for all our clients.
10. What sort of changes in your life have you experienced since taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
CrossFit can give you mental toughness and confidence you never knew you had. It allows me to go unashamed and not at all embarrassed to have the most unflattering pictures of 6 am jersey hair (as Sean says), unnatural body positions, and a sweaty red face posted on facebook for all to see!! Or having all the guys get a good look at my “giving birth face” ( as Scott says) while I squat clean! Before CrossFit, I definitely couldn’t handle that!!However, I do think the way you spend your time in a CrossFit gym can be a reflection of how you choose to spend your time in life and business. If you want something bad enough you have to work hard. It doesn’t come easy, but the reward is worth it. Feels great when you get a new PR or crush a workout! We agree…Scott is a Creeper.
11. Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFS moments.
The anticipation, the anxiety and the fun surrounding the Wednesday night announcements of the Open workouts was so much fun! The energy, team spirit and focus in the gym on the Friday morning Open workouts were awesome. We came together as a group and cheered each other on and competition brings out the best in everyone! The CFS Throwdown was another fabulous time! However, daily I feel like I laugh until my stomach hurts at some of the most comical people I have ever met!
12. Any advice for people just getting started?
If you are camera shy.. don’t join. Nicolle loves pictures!!! My advice is to have fun and work hard. You’ll get out what you put into it! Write down your workouts from the beginning, it is amazing and inspiring to look back and see improvement!!! But Nicolle mostly takes pictures of herself so no biggie…
13. What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
I am a single mother of three and a business owner, so right now I spend a lot of time trying to grow my business, so I can spend more time traveling with my friends and family. I enjoy golfing, skiing, walks on the beach, concerts… and this is starting to sound much like an online dating profile!!! Just puttin it out there!!
