Monday May 27, 2013 CrossFit Stapleton- Denver, CO (MEMORIAL DAY WOD)

warrior

Today is Memorial Day; a day specifically set aside by Congress to recognize those in our country’s past who gave what President Abraham Lincoln called the “Last full measure of Devotion”. This is a daunting task, honoring such sacrifice, how do we do this appropriately? Adequately? How does a 1 hour “WOD for Warriors” make a difference?

Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, even Marines, all have fears, especially in combat. A little known fact is that for most, death isn’t even in the top two. What they fear most is failing their buddy – they would much rather fall themselves then fail their brothers and sisters. The second fear is that if they do die well, doing a job they love for a country they cherish, that their sacrifice may somehow be forgotten.

Today is about us saying no, that fear will NEVER be realized.

The power of today lies within the idea that right now you are committing yourself to this workout on behalf of their memories. Let your next hour belong to the men and women who fought and died for this country, and for them alone. Let this be a statement of our commitment to never forget, and the promise to appreciate what we have, what it truly cost, and how precious that is.

Here’s our “21 Guns” Salute.

The WOD:

“21 Guns – A Memorial Salute”

Partner #1:

21 Pull-ups
21 Burpee Box Jumps (20″ Rxd)
21 Partner Med-Ball Throws over pull-up rig (20#/14#)
21 Burpee Box Jumps21 Pull-Ups

Partner #2 executes
Partner #1 again
Partner #2 again

The 21 reps signify a 21 gun salute, the 5 exercises are one for each Branch of the Military. Executing with a Partner signifies the bonds we aim to create between our Nation’s Warriors and the communities they grow in and return to, and doing it twice reflects the fact that we honor both the living and the deceased.
