 What is your occupation?

No comment! Well, I’ll just say that I worked for a nonprofit organization back on the east coast for the last 8 years but am now looking for new opportunities!

When did you first start CrossFitting?
February, 2012

What is your Favorite WOD? How about your favorite Benchmark W.O.D.?

I love workouts that involve running – I tend to like longer workouts that involve a variety of movements (like box jumps, wall balls, burpees, etc). I really liked the “Fight Gone Bad” WOD and love to hate “Fran” (just because it is so hard and I think that is the last one I did)!

What is your least favorite WOD?

Anything that involves rowing for extended periods of time or as part of intervals. Like the 2k row…ugh! Absolutely kills me – and one of the few workouts that results in me flopping around on the gym floor trying to recover!

Tell us about your sports and fitness background.

I played soccer my entire life, up through high school (had an ACL injury and that prevented me from playing in college). I did some gymnastics when I was younger and was always a runner, but never really ran long distances until a couple of years ago. In 2010, I decided to run a marathon – I had never run more than 4 miles at the time. But, I ended up finishing the Denver marathon in 4 hours and 13 seconds… and then took a year off! I was always pretty active but don’t think I ever really knew what being “in shape” was until I joined CF. I still like to incorporate running and yoga when I can and recently did the Tough Mudder with some friends.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

I had been hearing about CrossFit for a while and was excited when we moved to Stapleton to find out that there was one a few minutes away. At the time, I was doing yoga a couple times a week and running here and there but wasn’t doing much else as far as working out goes. I knew the key would be getting my husband to join which was no easy feat! But, after we set up an appointment and talked to Emilio, we were ready… Best thing I have ever done! My first workout was stations – 8 rounds, 30 seconds of work, 30 seconds of rest – rowing, hammer swings, burpees, push press, DU’s, wall balls, box jumps, kb swings – my kind of workout, minus the rower!

I remember being nervous and not at all ready for the intensity. But, it was so fun and I remember being really sore (especially coming off of Elements)… I have since learned that the nervousness / those butterflies you get during the 10-second countdown before each workout NEVER go away (especially before the workouts you know are going to hurt real bad)!

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)

After just a few weeks of CF, I could feel myself getting stronger but now I can see a huge difference in where I was when I first started until now. I can handle more weight, get through the workouts faster and have definitely seen a change in my nutrition as well. I had always eaten pretty healthy but am now more aware of my diet (and notice a difference if I slack on my nutrition or have a little too much fun over the weekend).  Also, some of my friends and even hubby have commented that I am filling out my jeans just a little bit better these days, if you know what I mean… thank you, air squats (or maybe it was wall ball appreciation day)!

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced  since taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

Well, I love that my husband enjoys CF almost as much as I do and that it’s something that we can do together (we barely watch tv anymore and spend so much more time cooking and being active)…I never thought I’d say this but I will probably never step foot on a treadmill again (boring) and you will definitely never find me wandering aimlessly around a gym trying to figure out what the heck to do, ever again! I look forward to every CF workout (it really is a part of my every day) and have gotten more and more competitive with myself, especially as I have gotten stronger – now, instead of trying just to get through workouts, I am always trying to challenge myself to get better at the movements and the WODs and to try new things, even if they scare the crap out of me.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFS moments.

I have many actually. Watching the first in-house throw-down and seeing the camaraderie in the gym. Getting my first pullup, finally “getting” double unders, other CFitters cheering me on and giving me pointers, ripping open my first callous (okay that wasn’t a favorite moment but DK was right – oddly satisfying). I have great moments every time I am in the gym, which mostly has to do with the people and coaches, and definitely the reason I love it so much!

Any advice for people just getting started?

Just stick with it. Keep showing up. The soreness never really goes away but somehow it gets easier to manage over time. And if you keep coming, you will see amazing results and will continually surprise yourself! Oh, and, if you can manage to avoid looking at this blog/ WOD before the workout (which, chances are, like me, you won’t be able to) – it is fun to let yourself be surprised by what is in store by waiting until you get to the gym rather than prepping for it all day…it will force you to come in even it is a WOD that scares you… And, it’s always fun to come to the blog after the workouts to see what kind of crazy pics they got of you that day!

What’s your short and long term goals?

My goals are really just to continue to improve in the workouts, to get stronger, beat some of my PRs, and get to a point where I can continually do pullups (instead of the 4-5 I am stuck at…frustrating).

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

All the usuals – spending time with my family and friends and my dog. Snowboarding (or attempting to snowboard, more accurately), running, yoga, etc… But, mostly just CF.
