“My TRIBE” Who is Your Tribe?
Why do you Crossfit? At our gym, you could very well get 3-5 different answers per member. “It’s Challenging”, “to get in great shape”, “to master the plethora of difficult movements”, “to do the common uncommonly well”, “I love the coaching and organizaton”. However, WE HOPE 1 common answer would prevail. What is that one common answer? Camaraderie, Esprit de Corps, Team, Friendship, Unity– whatever you want to call it.
I know there were many reasons I decided to join the military and undergo difficult selections- to serve my country, to challenge myself, to prove myself to me and others, to be the best. Out of all of these, being a part of the TEAM was the best single thing I took away. I loved it when there were 10, 20, 30 people in the same room trying to accomplish the same goal/mission/result. Everyone wanted to be there…. and that was magic. I knew the guy next to me had my back and wore the same uniform as me and that meant everything (to me at least). Yeah sure, egos can always get in the way and distract (if we let them) but at the end of the day I knew you would put it on the line for me… and I for you. I see many of parallels between these 2 worlds. Sure, at the end of the day it’s still just a work out and I get that. But then why aren’t we doing it alone at 24 hour fitness or in your garage? (Seth -jk!) That’s the magic with Crossfit-each other. The synergy of community.
I had the unique privilege of just coming to class as a client for a month as I decided to step away from coaching as I was trying to get my personal life in order, and put my children in a special home that allows electro-shock therapy. It was so great to be on the other side of the pull up bars and just be part of the group. I left that gym every morning charged! Sure the WOD had a lot to do with it, but the people were what I really loved. Busting each others balls and getting ready to compete with ourselves and each other-but mostly ourselves and that little man inside your head that say “no you can’t”. To lose it for awhile made me see it and appreciate it more than ever.
So what’s my point? That at CFS, we don’t give a flying s*%# if you can do a sub 3:00 Fran, or string together several muscle ups, or squat clean 250++. As a matter of fact I will take a positive attitude and receptive client who needs 5 bands to get their chin over the bar then the selfish, egotistical, “WODKILLA” who never once turned around and cheered on their lesser skilled class mate after they had long ago finished their own WOD. We care about having good, caring, quality people that are together, and by no coincidence we have huge quantity of those people! Loyalty to each other, helping each other strive to accomplish personal fitness goals, and the CFS organization, is everything to us. So let’s be clear, if you aren’t interested in cheering on the guy next to you, being part of a tribe, whispering words of encouragement to your classmate, or helping them with a skill you mastered….get the f*%# out! Because there is 5 people coming next month that will…and thats the tribe we are building. To the ones that already do, we are so glad you are here.
