When did you first start CrossFitting? 

Three years ago – November of 2010


When did you first start training at CFS?

My first exposure to CFS was at boot camp in the fall of 2011.  I really loved it; then, Nicolle bullied me until I came inside to the gym last winter.


Favorite WOD

I love interval workouts. Anything with running is great, except Nancy. I also like chipper style WODs with lots of different movements.


Least Favorite WOD

Grace (all clean and jerk) or anything else that is all Olympic lifting


Favorite Lift?

Front or back squat, I think.  Definitely not strict press.


Tell us about your sports & fitness background.


I’ve always been a runner and lover of the outdoors. Beyond a brief middle school foray into volleyball and basketball (which did not go well), I’ve tried to stay away from sports that involve any hand-eye coordination.  I ran competitively (Cross-Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track) all 4 years of High School and College.  Those 8 years of intense training and competition were fun, but I thought I was done with all of that hard work.  CrossFit has been a whole new fitness adventure for me.


How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? 


When I lived in NC, I had a great group of running friends.  We ran in the early morning darkness every day, until they all ended up either pregnant or injured.  I began to complain to my husband about not having anyone to run with in the morning.  All the while, he was doing CrossFit and loving it.  He tried to talk me into trying it for months, but I stubbornly refused (remember, I liked being outside, not in a gym).  Finally, he wore me down, I tried a class and was hooked.


Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?


Unfortunately, the day I first went to CrossFit (at Metro Fitness in Charlotte, NC), I was the only person who showed up to class.  Even more unfortunately, the WOD was 100 jumping pull-ups, 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, and 100 air squats.  I tried to sneak out before class started.  The Coach wouldn’t have it, so I stayed and did the workout alone.  It was pretty awful at the time, but really awful in the days to follow when I couldn’t walk, lift my arms or sneeze. Nevertheless, I couldn’t wait to go back and try it again.


What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)


I’ve always been really active and in decent cardio shape, but I have definitely noticed a marked improvement in my strength and general fitness.  I feel like there are so many more things I can do easily. I feel stronger and more agile in daily activities and at the gym.  A year ago, it was a struggle to do one or two un-banded pull-ups, and now I’ve worked my way up to almost 40.  I’m not a great lifter, but weights that used to be completely impossible now seem do-able. I even feel stronger running, which is not a change I expected.  I love tackling a workout that seems so daunting and impossible and coming out the other side completely spent but with a great feeling of accomplishment.


I attribute all of this improvement to being surrounded by amazing CFS coaches who really believe that I am capable of so much more than I ever think I am.  They push me to do things that I would never think to try, and I have loved the challenge.


What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?


The whole experience of CrossFit has been an unexpected adventure. I approached it as a short-term solution until I could run with my friends again. I never imagined that I would enjoy it as much as I do and certainly didn’t expect it to be so addictive. As I tell anyone who asks, I love the intensity of the exercise but I keep coming back because of the amazing community of people surrounding me at CFS.  The camaraderie and friendship that I’ve found among my fellow athletes at CFS and the passion, energy and commitment of Tayler, Sean, Becky, Greg, Nicolle and Emilio make it hard to stay away.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFS moments.


There are many, but I have to say the Crosstown Throwdown is a real highlight.  Despite how brutal the workouts were (damn you, Sean) and how anxious the competitors were about being able to rise to the challenge, there was such a spirit of teamwork and camaraderie.  The atmosphere was electric and exciting and the energy shared among the athletes and spectators made for a great experience.


Another favorite CrossFit memory: I remember the day I introduced my sister to CrossFit.  She’s this phenomenal triathlete who has succeeded at all things athletic, but she had never done CrossFit.  I took her to class with me one Saturday, and it happened to be a partner WOD.  She punished me for an hour as we worked out together, but when that workout ended I remember the smile on her face.  She was hooked – a new CrossFit addict.  Since then, she has been certified as a Level 1 coach and opened the first CrossFit box in the mountains of NC.  It’s been great fun sharing this pastime with her and comparing times and weights from afar.


Any advice for people just getting started?


Stick with it. I think the whole thing can seem overwhelming at times – all of the crazy lifts you are supposed to remember how to do, the weights you’re supposed to write down, the lingo, the intense demands on your body and psyche, but it does get easier and more fun.  Trust that you really can do more than you think you can.  Also, give your body time to recover so that you can keep demanding more of it.


What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?


I love to do anything that involves being outside – skiing, biking, sledding, running, playing sports with my kids. I have really loved watching my kids begin their own athletic careers.  Watching them play soccer, lacrosse, basketball, ski and mountain bike is my favorite!
